SATCHVAI ALBUM DROPPING THIS FALL: Back in early 2024, right before the G3 Reunion Tour started, Steve Vai asked if I had time to track a song him and Joe Satriani wrote together for their album in progress. I had exactly one free day, and I went to Vai’s Harmony Hut to track it in person that day. The song started with a rescued vintage reel-to-reel recording from one of Vai's guitar lessons with Satriani in the early 1970s (!), a bit of a jam when they were both just teenagers. From there it morphed into what is now “The Sea Of Emotion, Pt. 3”, the closing track on the SATCHVAI album that’s now due to drop in early November. The whole thing is an amazing story and I’m really glad I could be a part of it. ![]()

What’s even weirder/cooler is that today I find myself at Mates Rehearsal Studios today rehearsing for a slew of upcoming dates with Mike Keneally. It’s been a long while since I was at this particular location, and I suddenly realized when the last time I was here: 2007, when I auditioned for Steve Vai and joined his String Theories touring band shortly thereafter. Life is funny sometimes, right?
BACK TO MY ROOTS: Looking forward to jamming some Hendrix and Deep Purple at the Bluesadelic Sessions tomorrow night in DTLA. Artur Menezes is the curator, and he's an amazing guitarist from Brazil (now living in LA) who I met literally onstage when he sat in on a Joe Satriani gig in Brazil back in 2017. Should be a good time if you're looking for Saturday night entertainment here in unusually humid LA!![]()

(Also, did you know I was in a blues-rock band for two years in my early 20s in Boston, and I thought that's where I was headed before I turned left at Albuquerque and ended up playing fancy guitar music in LA? It's true!)
THE GRIND NEVER STOPS: I wanted to headline this post this way for a reason, and I’ll explain below. First, this is a really comprehensive interview I did with Niels Guns for the Sixty Scales And The Truth podcast (YouTube link in first comment). Some of you may know parts of this story already - but in today’s always-be-scrolling world, I never know who hasn’t. It’s a speedrun in terms of how I got to where I am, and thanks to Niels for the opportunity to do this (from a morning in Eindhoven NL in the 9th week of The Aristocrats European tour in early June). ![]()

But I want to be really clear about something, especially to the tons of super-talented aspiring musicians out there: despite the way some of this is framed, to say “it finally happened” or “I made it” isn’t really the whole picture, and I promise this isn’t about false modesty. Yes, I am *super* grateful for the success I’ve had, and it’s never easy in this business and successes are to be celebrated shown as proof that good things can happen…*and* it’s not a permanent-for-life thing unless you’ve got songwriting/publishing on Led Zeppelin or The Eagles or Foo Fighters or something. The work continues, and a career in music is a process and not an event. There’s no hammock or lounge chair here - right now I’m working like crazy on a passion project (a new solo album), and I’m exploring new opportunities for playing. And I’m not too busy or “successful” (what does that word really mean, anyway?) to work on new things. I’m in Los Angeles more these days. Social media posts of stages and crowds halfway around the world are awesome, and that’s not all that life is. There’s always more to it than that. And I’m happy to explore it. So if you have a gig or project and you’re thinking “I don’t know if he’d do that”, feel free to rethink that and drop me a line. The grind continues!![]()
