GEN X + NEXT GEN: Two more NAMM pics. That's gospel bass legend Andrew Gouche (we go back to the late 90s SWR days together) and bassist/educator Norm Stockton, whose original fusion band played on the same bill as The Aristocrats' very first show at the Anaheim Bass Bash in January of 2011 (and they killed!). ![]()
The other pic features 2025 Wes Wehmiller Scholarship Award winner Stella Chapple. Old heads know that the next generation is ready to groove.
NAS-TEE MEN: It's always a hoot at the Big Johnson booth at NAMM, and luthier Troy Johnson knows how to deliver the big (acoustic) bottom. Now add Norwood Fisher from Fishbone and things get even wackier.
ALL THE GUITARISTS: Well, at least two more at NAMM. Got to see the killer Jack Gardiner tear it up (with Rabea Afro, not shown) for a great duet. And also ran into the amazing Michael Lee Firkins, who not enough people know about imho! (I tried to tag him but couldn't - he's here @michael.l.firkins)
NAMM PHOTOS INCOMING: Way too many for one post, so I’ll share a couple each day. We’ll start with guitarists Jason Richardson (formerly of All That Remains) and Scottie LePage (of Polyphia). Coupla pretty talented folks right there! Also the faces feel thematically linked somehow.
RABEEEAAA: This meeting was a long time coming. I’m a huge fan of Rabea Massaad's (Rabea Afro) work and overall ethos - yes, chops, technique, all there, but secondary to tone and vibe and sonic atmosphere. I had the pleasure of watching a very brief set of his at the Music Man booth, and to my delight he played “Prayermonger” from the Toska album “Fire By The Silos”, one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years. ![]()
And did you know Rabea is a fan of early Mike Keneally? He’s got a lot of followers and he posted himself playing the heavy riff to “Lightnin’ Roy” of all things! If you’re not hip to Rabea for some reason, I invite you to check him out - he’s all over the interwebs. ![]()
Who thinks we should collaborate somehow? 😉
