WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE (2011)

A raw, powerful, intimate live document of the Bryan Beller Band 2010 touring lineup playing a 45-minute set at The Baked Potato in Los Angeles, plus two bonus tracks from other shows. Featuring: Rick Musallam (guitar), Griff Peters (guitar), Mike Keneally (keyboards & guitar), Bryan Beller (bass), Joe Travers (drums).

***************

Bassist/composer and sideman extraordinaire (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally) Bryan Beller’s first live album, Wednesday Night Live, is a raw, in-your-face, up-close-and-personal recording of Beller’s 2010 live band at the world famous Baked Potato in Los Angeles, and a serious statement from an artist who’s quickly establishing himself as one of the elite bass playing and compositional voices in the rock/jazz fusion scene today.

It started modestly, with Beller’s band opening for longtime compatriot Mike Keneally’s band using the same five musicians (including themselves) for five shows in the Northeast. The plan was for the Keneally/Beller “They’re Both The Same Band” tour to then hit the west coast, but scheduling got sticky. “We were able to confirm one date that worked for everyone: Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at The Baked Potato,” says Beller, who turns 40 this May. “And I said, screw it, let’s record it and see what happens. This is what happened.”

The album is Beller’s 6-song, 45-minute live set from the tour, plus bonus material consisting of a performance of View from the WesFest 2 benefit concert, and a rowdy, live-to-two-track rendition of “Cave Dweller” from the Thanks In Advance record release gig.

Beller already has two critically acclaimed studio releases under his belt: 2003’s View (“A solo album so good it makes you wonder why he bothered doing anything else.” – Bill Leigh, Bass Player ) and 2008’s Thanks in Advance (“A bonafide entry for bass album of the year.” – Chris Jisi, Bass Player). With a collection of intricately composed, multi-track layered tunes in his repertoire, and a true touring band for the first time in his career, Beller saw the issue of live vs. studio arrangements as a balancing act.

“I see myself as a rock/jazz fusion artist, with the rock part coming first. And I remember going to see Pink Floyd shows and wanting to see them honor the songs and individual parts I loved so much, while at the same time digging it when they stretched out in certain spots. That’s the balance I wanted the band to strike. So you’ll hear little parts and even some solos of mine that stay close to the record version, because I consider them a part of the song to some extent, and I want to honor that. But there’s also a lot of room to push the boundaries when we want to, and having such great players and friends in the band – guys I know and trust deeply, like Rick, Griff, Joe and Mike – just makes those moments extra special.”

Though there’s plenty of intensity in the funk/fusion workouts “Greasy Wheel” and “Seven Percent Grade” (to say nothing of the emotional low-to-high rollercoaster segue of “Life Story” and “Get Things Done”), Beller’s landmark ten-minute composition “Love Terror Adrenaline/Break Through” stands out as the set’s high point. “We’re talking about a studio cut with tons of tracks and layers and overdubs, and an impossibly complex melody played by Mike Keneally, and we condensed it into a five-piece arrangement that I’m quite proud of. The band played their asses off on that. They played their asses off all night. That’s why I wanted to put this out – because I think the way they played this material really deserves to be heard.”

ROCKING THE PRAIRIE MIDWEST: The Satch-Vai tour hits Omaha tonight, then it's on to Salina KS, and St. Louis and Kansas City MO. This pic from Cleveland is the vibe of this tour (also it's unfortunate Rai Thistlethwayte erasure but I'll fix that in a future Rai/BB post!). Meanwhile the big news from The Aristocrats drops tomorrow!Joe Satriani Steve Vai Kenny Aronoff📸 Kara Marie Photography ... See MoreSee Less

SALES PITCH: "You! Yes, you in the front row! What'll it take to get you into a Gallien-Krueger rig *today*?"The Satch-Vai tour plays Springfield, MO tonight. I have been touring the United States for 25 years and I have never played here. Pretty town! Also, thank you Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Des Moines for three great shows. And stay tuned for a big announcement from The Aristocrats coming very soon.📸 Sean Molin ... See MoreSee Less

SHRED MAKES STRANGE BEDFELLOWS: I had a very special guest at the Satch-Vai show in Indianapolis - Sean Trende. I realize that the overwhelming majority of folks following this account are like, “Uh, who?” But there’s probably a few politically minded people out there who are rubbing their eyes and saying, “How exactly did THAT happen?” (Alex Skolnick, I’m looking at you!)I’ll stop hiding the ball here: Sean Trende is the Senior Elections Analyst for the political website Real Clear Politics. For the politics followers out there, that means he manages and maintains the RCP Poll Average, one of the leading (and the original) “poll of polls” that averages a selection of available polls on the presidential (and many other) races together to produce one true average that reflects the polling state of a race at any given moment. A lot people in this country watch that average very closely. It’s kind of a big deal. And that’s just what Sean does now. Previously he worked in Big Law for a while (with firms/clients all the way up to the Supreme Court); he’s served as a Special Master that helped draw the Congressional district lines of the State Of Virginia (among others); he’s an author, a political science expert, and a very smart guy. He also is a big fan of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and many other artists in the guitar-driven instrumental rock genre. He *gets* this stuff (and plays a Flying V!). We stumbled across each other nearly five years ago in a Twitter thread about Eddie Van Halen. Me being a super duper politics nerd, I recognized him. We’ve had an incredibly rich correspondence about music and politics and all sorts of things ever since. But it wasn’t until this Joe Satriani/Steve Vai tour that we actually met in person (along with his two sons, one of whom plays guitar and owns an Ibanez Jem Jr.!). So this in-person meeting was years in the making! And my friendship with Sean is something I really treasure. Confession: I love political writing. Just the craft of it. (For example: I don’t agree with George Will on much, but for my money he’s the most gifted political writer I’ve ever read.) I used to read The New Republic and National Review and The Nation and The Weekly Standard and the editorial pages of the New York Times front to back, religiously. I’ve been following it all closely for 35 years now. There is an alternate timeline of my life where I stayed on the honors course in high school, probably went to Harvard (like my father, brother and sister!), and went into the back end of politics. Not as a candidate (god forbid), but working as an operative or a writer. I didn’t do that, and both myself and the world are probably a lot better off for it. Now, anyone who has followed me for a while online knows that, every once in a while, I’ll throw something political out there. I didn’t do it for a while, but in this day age, I felt compelled a few times. I have been strident on occasion. (It’s definitely cost me followers here and there. That’s fine. It’s just, like, my opinion, man.) I’m a lifelong liberal/progressive, and Sean is a center-right libertarian. We don’t agree on everything, but we don’t disagree on everything. But that’s besides the point. We have great conversations, he’s a good and decent man, and I respect him immensely. Music brought us together. And I’m grateful for that. The funny thing is: To me, *he’s* the rock star. Imagine having the gig *he* has! ... See MoreSee Less
